Dear Residents, Neighbors, and Friends:
As we approach the end of 2024, I am reminded of the collective resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment that each of you has demonstrated throughout the year. November and December offer moments for reflection, gratitude, and celebration - a time to acknowledge the progress we have made and set our sights on the work that lies ahead.
This season, we celebrate our year-long achievements in advancing human rights, equity, and inclusion across the District. From impactful community partnerships and educational programs to proactive enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, our agency has stood as a beacon for justice and support. These milestones reflect our team and partners' collaborative spirit and tireless efforts. Notably, our strong partnerships with community advocates, businesses, and local organizations, as well as the progress of different key initiatives, have been especially meaningful in empowering vulnerable communities this year.
We observe Native American Heritage Month in November, honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous communities. This time is an opportunity to celebrate their traditions, languages, and stories, ensuring that these legacies continue to thrive for future generations. This November, and throughout the year, we recognize how Native American and Alaska Native communities enrich our nation’s identity and values.
December brings the warmth of the holiday season, fostering a spirit of compassion and unity. It is a moment to reconnect with loved ones and renew our dedication to building an inclusive community. December is also National Human Rights Month, and on this Human Rights Day, December 10, 2024, we reaffirm that human rights are essential pathways to solutions, serving as preventative, protective, and transformative forces for good.
Our work to protect and promote human rights is continuous, and I am sincerely grateful for your unwavering support. The DC Human Rights Act reflects our unwavering commitment to broad anti-discrimination protections, safeguarding 23 traits to ensure inclusivity and equity for all. Your dedication fuels meaningful progress and inspires a more inclusive and equitable future for all Washingtonians. I look forward to deepening our community connections, expanding efforts to educate individuals about their rights and protections, and unveiling exciting initiatives in 2025 that will further advance our shared mission.
Thank you for being part of OHR’s vital work and efforts. Wishing you and your families a joyous holiday season and a hopeful start to 2025!
In Solidarity,
Kenneth Saunders
