It Takes a District: Tools and Tips for Families to Prevent Bullying

Join the D.C. Office of Human Rights and the Mayor’s Youth Bullying Prevention Task Force to understand the important role that families play in bullying prevention!

An Afternoon of Fun and Learning:

The day will begin with a resource fair, in which families can learn about bullying prevention from our government agencies, non-profit organizations, and schools. Parents, care givers and guardians will have the opportunity to engage in various workshops held throughout the day as well. These workshops will be specially designed to share tools and tips to support bullying prevention and create a foundation for addressing concerns. What do yoga and mindfulness have to do with bullying? How can we address cyberbullying by fostering digital citizenship? How can play decrease instances of mistreatment at recess and school? Learn answers to these questions and so much more at the workshops!

Professionals will also be available on-site to meet individually with families to create family bullying prevention plans. 

We will open the day with a performance of the No Offense Step Team and close out with DC Youth Slam Team. Come out at enjoy, learn, and help us create a District where all youth feel safe and supported.

Performances:

Peace Jam featuring the No Offense Program: Peace Jam will feature the No Offense Program's message of non-violence, including preventing bullying.  Peace Jam performers are: The Center City Charter School; Trinidad Tiger Step Team; and Bryanna, a Center City Shaw student and rapper.

DC YOUTH SLAM TEAM: After the workshops, THE DC YOUTH SLAM TEAM will perform. THE DC YOUTH SLAM TEAM, a program of the national nonprofit Split This Rock, uses poetry to teach and empower teens from the DC metropolitan area to speak up about issues of social justice.

Every half hour a new workshop will begin: 10:30-11, 11:10-11:40, 11:50-12:20, 12:30-1

·  Playworks: 6 years old and up – everyone welcome

·  Mindfulness and Yoga (alternating slots): Adults only

·  Looking for signs of bullying and what to do/Cyberbullying (alternating slots): Adults only

·  Tai Chi: 6 and up  - everyone welcome
