OHR Youth Human Rights Ambassador Program

OHR Youth Human Rights Ambassador Program 

The DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) has a unique opportunity for DC high school students to serve as Youth Human Rights Ambassadors. Youth Human Rights Ambassadors will work alongside OHR staff and will have a unique opportunity to be actively involved in local government. Youth Human Rights Ambassadors will be tasked with the following:  

  • Promote dialogue among youth on laws, rights, and issues that impact youth living in the District of Columbia 

  • Develop and implement programming (events, activities, campaigns, etc.) with the goal of engaging and educating District youth and residents about the DC Human Rights Act of 1977, civil rights laws, and other issues that may be of concern.  


Eligibility Requirements:  

To serve as a Youth Human Rights Ambassador, youth must meet the following eligibility requirements:  

  • Youth must be enrolled in a District of Columbia high school. 

  • Youth must be a rising 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student.  

  • Able to attend Youth Human Rights Ambassador training (date/time TBA) 

  • Able to attend Youth Human Rights Ambassador meetings 1-2 times a month. 

  • Meetings are held on Thursdays from 5:00pm – 6:30pm at the Metropolitan Square Building, 655 15TH STREET, NW, WASHINGTON, DC 20005 


What we’re looking for:  

  • Passionate and motivated by human and civil rights issues that impact youth.  

  • Desire to be an active participant in all events, activities, and meetings sponsored by the Office of Human Rights and the Youth Human Rights Ambassador Program.  

  • Be a responsible leader and act with integrity throughout your term as a Youth Human Rights Ambassador.  


Application Process: 

All applicants to the Youth Human Rights Ambassador Program must apply by downloading and filling out the application and email it to [email protected] by Friday, June 14, 2024 at 5:00pm

 Application requirements include: 

  • Completed application 

  • Letter of Recommendation from a non-family member 

  • Written Parent Permission 

All applications will be reviewed and select candidates will be contacted for a final interview.
