Commissioner Colin Rettammel
Colin Rettammel (he/they) is an experienced trial attorney and appellate attorney with a background of adjudicating and litigating complex appeals. He currently serves as a judicial law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. There, he assists several federal judges in making and drafting appellate decisions. Prior to his time on the Court, he litigated appeals for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where he reviewed decisions from the administrative Board of Veterans Appeals and either facilitated readjudication of those decision or defended them in federal court.
Mr. Rettammel previously served as an Assistant Public Defender for the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. There, he defended many individuals in both District and Circuit court, and in both bench and jury trials. In this position, he fought tirelessly to ensure that indigent defendants from a diverse array of backgrounds were treated with compassion, understanding, and afforded equal treatment under the law.
Mr. Rettammel has also worked for the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Metropolitan Police Department. Throughout all his work, Mr. Rettammel has expressed a passion for human and civil rights and always sought fair and equal treatment for all individuals.
A Ward 5 resident, Mr. Retammel holds a B.S. in Public Administration from George Mason University, and a J.D. with honors from the American University Washington College of Law
