(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Registration is now open for a free workshop with Muslim faith and community leaders that aims to help participants better understand Islam and the experiences of Muslim DC residents, as well as how to be effective allies for the Muslim community. Hosted by the DC Office of Human Rights in partnership with Shoulder-to-Shoulder, the discussion will include concrete steps participants can take to counter Islamophobia and increase mutual understanding and respect in the District.

(WASHINGTON, DC) – In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Day, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maria Odom of the US Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign today announced a new partnership to increase efforts to combat human trafficking, as well as new anti-trafficking initiatives by the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Effective December 17, 2014, the Fair Criminal Record Screening Amendment Act prohibits covered DC employers from inquiring into a job applicant's criminal background before extending a conditional offer of employment. Covered employers must also have a legitimate business reason for revoking a conditional job offer based on an applicant's criminal background. The DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) accepts and investigates complaints that allege violations of this Act, and when violations are found, monetary penalties can be imposed.
Did you know that DC's fair housing laws protect 18 different classes from discrimination? In this free training for DC landlords, property managers, realtors, and leasing agents, staff from the DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) will explain DC's fair housing laws and OHR's enforcement process when a violation of the law is alleged. Topics will include discrimination against people with disabilities, people of color, and victims of domestic violence.

Effective October 1, 2015, the Protecting Pregnant Workers Fairness Act of 2014 (PPW) requires District of Columbia employers to provide reasonable workplace accommodations for employees whose ability to perform job duties is limited because of pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or a related medical condition. Individuals who believe they were denied a reasonable accommodation or treated unfairly in violation of PPW will be able to file a complaint with the DC Office of Human Rights (OHR).
