Beginning October 1, 2017, the DC Office of Human Rights will be enforcing two important new laws that will impact businesses and housing providers across the District: The Fair Criminal Record Screening for Housing Act of 2016 and the Fair Credit in Employment Amendment Act of 2016.
Beginning October 1, 2017, the DC Office of Human Rights will be enforcing two important new laws that will impact businesses and housing providers across the District: The Fair Criminal Record Screening for Housing Act of 2016 and the Fair Credit in Employment Amendment Act of 2016.
Beginning October 1, 2017, the new Fair Credit in Employment Amendment Act of 2016 amends the DC Human Rights Act to include "Credit Information" as the law's 20th protected trait. The amendment prohibits employers, employment agencies, and labor organizations in the District of Columbia may not discriminate against an employee or an applicant based on their credit information. This means that employers, unless excluded by the law (see below), may not ask for, or rely on, credit information of a current or potential employee in making employment decisions.
Beginning October 1, 2017, the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) will be charged with enforcing the Fair Criminal Record Screening for Housing Act of 2016, which prevents unlawful screening of a housing applicant’s criminal background.

At this free training for the DC Small Business Development Center at Howard University, staff from the DC Office of Human Rights (OHR), DC's civil rights enforcement agency, will provide detailed information on DC's civil rights protections based on gender identity/expression, national origin, sex, and race in the context of providing public accommodations and good customer service.
