DC Office of Human Rights Co-hosts Latino Tenant Summit

Tuesday, May 11, 2010
OHR co-hosts first citywide Latino Tenant Summit.

The DC Office of Human Rights and the Office of the Tenant Advocate, in collaboration with the Latino Federation, Carlos Rosario International Career Center and a variety of community organizations, are organizing the first annual citywide Latino Tenant Summit. This historic meeting of low and moderate income tenants, community activists and city leadership is scheduled to take place at the Carlos Rosario International Career Center & Public Charter School at 1100 Harvard Street, NW on Saturday, May 15th from 8 am – 1 pm.

The five hour Summit will include a plenary session, workshops and information booths to provide information on housing regulations, the housing inspection process, tenant organizing, landlord tenant relations, legal protections for tenants and the services available for renters to make their homes safe and secure. Real estate providers and the non-profit housing sector will also be represented. The formation of a city-wide Latino Tenant Coalition will also be announced.

Latino tenants make up an important segment of the city’s tenant population and are among the most vulnerable and at risk of living in unsanitary and unsafe accommodations and subject to higher rates of eviction and abuse than the general population. This event will attempt to reach out and educate a great many individuals and families to improve their situation and circumstances and begin the process of organizing to improve conditions in the most neglected and dangerous buildings in the city.

The Summit will provide meals free of charge for the participants and will offer prizes and giveaways to those in attendance. Other partner organizations include: CARECEN, Latino Economic Development Corporation, AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly, Mt. Pleasant Latino Association, the Latino Action Coalition of DC, the Office on Latino Affairs and the Fair Housing Division of the Department of Housing & Community Development.

To register for the event, contact Manuel Bolaños at the Office of the Tenant Advocate via phone at (202) 719-6560 or email [email protected] or Juan Carlos Ruiz via phone at (414) 758-0600 or email [email protected]
