Women Share Perspectives on Gender Equity at TEDxMidAtlantic Salon

Speaker videos to be available online in coming weeks

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Seven women speakers shared powerful talks on gender equity Monday night at the TEDxMidAtlantic Salon EVE: Everyone Values Equality, presented by TEDxMidAtlantic in partnership with the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR). Speakers included Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, and Brigid Schulte, author of The New York Times bestseller Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time. The event explored the realities women currently face in the United States, and how to move toward a 21st century of equal opportunity for people of all genders and gender identities.

“It was a thrilling evening for the more than 250 attendees who filled the Woolly Mammoth Theatre to capacity, and I believe most of us walked away with fresh perspectives on reinventing the status quo and achieving gender equity,” said OHR Director Mónica Palacio. “We are excited to share videos of these inspiring talks when they are available, and to use them to generate important conversations on gender equity and District laws that protect women.”

OHR’s enforcement role has expanded this year after the passage of new laws in the District to protect women in the workplace and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. OHR continues to enforce one of the most progressive non-discrimination laws in the nation, which prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender identity and expression in employment, housing, public accommodations and educational institutions.

Additional speakers at the event included performer and educator Elizabeth Acevedo, Heather Foster of My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, returning citizen advocate Teresa Hodge, Lisa María Mallory of DC Building Industry Association, and transgender advocate Sarah McBride. Videos of each speakers’ talk will be released online in the coming weeks.

About the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights

The District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) was established to eradicate discrimination, increase equal opportunity and protect human rights for persons who live in or visit the District of Columbia. The agency enforces local and federal human rights laws, including the DC Human Rights Act, by providing a legal process to those who believe they have been discriminated against. OHR also proactively enforces human rights in the District through Director’s Inquiries, which allow it to identify and investigate practices and policies that may be discriminatory.
