(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Registration opens today for a TEDxMidAtlantic salon exploring the realities women currently face in the United States, and how to move toward a 21st century of equal opportunity for people of all genders and gender identities. The TEDxMidAtlantic salon EVE: Everyone Values Equality – presented in partnership with the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) – will feature speakers with fresh perspectives on reinventing the status quo and achieving gender equity. The event will be held at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre on Monday, November 16.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with TEDxMidAtlantic in using the TED platform to share ideas on furthering gender equity in the District and beyond,” said OHR Director Mónica Palacio. “Attendees will hear powerful stories and lessons from women on challenges and opportunities they have encountered in the workplace and in their lives.”

OHR’s enforcement role has expanded this year after the passage of new laws in the District to protect women in the workplace and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. OHR continues to enforce one of the most progressive non-discrimination laws in the nation, which prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender identity and expression in employment, housing, public accommodations and educational institutions.

Speakers will include Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, and Brigid Schulte, author of The New York Times bestseller Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time. Additional information and registration for the TEDxMidAtlantic salon EVE: Everyone Values Equality is available at tedxmidatlantic.com/2015-salon. About TEDx MidAtlantic

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At TEDxMidAtlantic, live speakers will spark deep discussion and connection. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

About the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights

The District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) was established to eradicate discrimination, increase equal opportunity and protect human rights for persons who live in or visit the District of Columbia. The agency enforces local and federal human rights laws, including the DC Human Rights Act, by providing a legal process to those who believe they have been discriminated against. OHR also proactively enforces human rights in the District through Director’s Inquiries, which allow it to identify and investigate practices and policies that may be discriminatory.
