The DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) investigates complaints of unlawful discrimination in employment, housing, educational institutions, and places of public accommodations, such as restaurants, hospitals, financial institutions, and insurance companies. OHR first works to settle the complaints through a process known as mediation. OHR will only mediate and investigate claims of discrimination it has jurisdiction over and that occurred within the District of Columbia. OHR also investigates possible violations of the DC Language Access Act. People that are limited in their ability to communicate in the English language have the right to access vital DC government information and programs in their own language. Any violations to the language access requirements by DC government agencies are enforced by OHR. To learn more about accessing government services in your own language, please visit our site for the Language Access Program. Bilingual "I Speak" and "Know Your Rights" cards are available to print out below.
For more information on how to file a discrimination claim, please call the Office of Human Rights at (202) 727-4559 or visit Investigations and Complaints.
