The Youth Human Rights Ambassador program -- a joint venture between the Commission on Human Rights and the Georgetown University Law Center’s Street Law Clinic -- has Law students enrolled in the Street Law Clinic teach high school students at participating schools about the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the District of Columbia Human Rights Act. After receiving training about human rights, the high school students are asked to develop a creative work reflecting their understanding or analysis of the general concept of human rights or a specific human rights issue. These creative expressions have been presented in various media and formats including: essays, PowerPoint presentations, posters, editorial cartoons, poems, newspapers, photo essays, videos, songs, paintings, sculptures, web sites and interactive mobile apps.
The goal of the Youth Human Rights Ambassador program is twofold. First, it is hoped that by training these high school students about human rights, a cadre of energetic young people will feel empowered to be vigilant about the protection of human rights today. And second, it is hoped that this growing cadre of young human rights ambassadors will become inspired to be the human rights advocates and activists of tomorrow.
Youth Human Rights Ambassador Contest
In 2012, nearly 200 projects created by students from 14 schools were submitted to the Youth Human Rights Ambassador Contest. Winners of the 2012 contest were:
- First Place: Nkechiryerem Agbaerueke of School Without Walls
- Second Place: Zarina Farmer-George of School Without Walls
- Third Place (TIE): Simone Tucker, Hannibal Bernard, Ke'asiah McLaughlin, and Antoinee Ross of Eastern Senior High School
- Third Place (TIE): Alena Mayershaya and Kyrylo Korol from School Without Walls
